UNEXPECTED OPERA IS . . .
. . . a team of performers who will stop at very little to entertain and move you.
. . . unpretentious and unashamedly down-to-earth, but still classy.
. . . not afraid to be outrageous - the only Opera Company with a Resident Comic.
. . . always looking for unexpected places and unexpected ways to perform.
. . . determined to liberate opera from conventions, connect with our audiences,
and build the careers of performers -– especially those just starting on their professional life.
Unexpected Opera is an innovative company offering fresh (and often hilarious) takes on classics, performed in English, with characters and settings you’ll recognise and enjoy. Over the past three years we have produced The Barber of Savile Row (Rossini), Orpheus Down Under (Offenbach), The Wedding (a pastiche entertainment) and A Pastoral Messiah (Handel), which have been very special experiences for our audiences. Arts Council England has supported us with two substantial grants. We have proven that we can entertain and surprise both opera-lovers and newcomers to opera. Have a look at Our Shows and Fan Mail to see what we mean.
We can provide enjoyable, active, one-off Opera Education Workshops for Primary and Secondary Schools, or devise and produce major music-theatre projects.
